Hello, Future Data Scientist! Welcome to FNB, the home of the #changeables. We are seeking an expert Data Scientist with a deep quantitative background to play a critical role in our credit risk framework. This position is central to supporting our Broader Africa (bA) teams with sophisticated stress testing, ICAAP processes, and IFRS 9 impairment modelling. You will be responsible for developing robust frameworks, providing expert review and challenge, and delivering insights that directly inform capital management and strategic decision-making across multiple countries.

Responsibilities

  • Stress Testing & ICAAP:
  • Develop and maintain a consistent credit risk stress testing framework for Broader Africa teams
  • Model and assess the impact of stress testing and scenario analysis on Expected Credit Loss (ECL)
  • Review, support, and challenge the execution of the annual ICAAP stress testing process, evaluating impacts on credit losses, capital adequacy, and risk-weighted assets
  • Provide sign-off on modelling and assessments performed by in-country teams
  • Review the overall outcome of stress testing to inform capital targets and challenge existing frameworks
  • Collaborate with Finance and Credit teams to ensure accurate IFRS 9 provisioning and provide insights into ECL trends and drivers
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Assist bA teams in presenting complex findings to senior management, risk committees, and regulators
  • Collaborate effectively with Finance, Treasury, and Business Units to align stress testing outputs with strategic planning

Qualifications

  • Essential: An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Econometrics, or a related quantitative field
  • Essential: Proven and strong experience in credit risk, IFRS 9 impairment modelling, and Expected Credit Loss (ECL) calculations within the financial services or banking sector
  • Essential: Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple countries and collaborate with diverse, cross-functional teams
  • The ideal candidate is curious, courageous, and obsessed with mastery in their field
